Acrylic paint from the craft section at walmart will work But if you have a craft store nearby like Michaels or hobby lobby i would try there to see about other options. But do not use latex paint as it will burn black. Also no oil based paints they will bubble if you burn your candle.

You can use colored melted candle wax on top of candles. This can be either melted candles or colored wax used in encaustic painting. You will have to keep the colors liquid by using heat underneath. Be careful, because this can be flammable. Get a good book on painting with wax so as to use the safest methods.
Alternately, you can paint a picture with regular paint on a piece of paper. Then you can attach it with glue, maybe rubber cement, to the surface.
However, bear in mind that this would make the candle purely decorative and should not be lit.

Well please don't try the cake icing idea....LOL!

As the others said, use acrylics. In the craft paint section, their is also a candle painting medium by DecoArt. You mix this with your paint colors and it helps the paint adhere to the wax surface.

Regular acrylic craft paints work just fine, based on my experience and about twenty different craft project books I own. Don't dilute it with any water, just paint directly onto the candles with undilute paint.
