Sometimes taking ecinacea before you get a cold can stop it in it's tracks. You know when you just start to feel a little itch in the roof of your mouth or you're a bit sniffly - that's the time to take ecinacea. I've also been told Aconite works the same for some people. Also lots of Vitamin C. I take the big tablets that dissolve in water in blackcurrant or orange flavours and that usually fends off the virus.

You can't. The average person will get 7 viral respiratory infections each year. I don't know if anyone will mention Echinacea. It was the subject of a fair sized controlled medical study to see if it reduced the incidence of colds, which it claims to do. The result was interesting, the Echinacea group got slightly more colds that lasted slightly longer than the placebo group! It is useless!

Well if you feel the symptoms of a cold coming on you wrap up warm and take some flu medication, urrm some beechams capsules or that drinkable stuff. Most importantly get some rest you will be able to fight the cold before you get full blown symptoms then..

There is no way you can stop the cold before it starts, you have to let it run it,s course, usually 2/3 days before you start to feel better, best thing is paracetamol every 4 hours that should take the edge off it, and let you carry on with your life.

Once you got it you can't get rid of it, you can fight the symptoms and maybe speed up the recovery a little by sleeping, resting and getting lots of vit c. You can prevent getting a cold by doing the same thing. Echinacea's also good, but what really kicks posteriors is a sickly horrible herbal substance called sambucol. It beefs up you're immune system like nothing else.

1000mg Vitamin C per day (one 500mg dose every 12 hours everyday for at least a year).
this from experience Will give you relief from catching a cold for up to two years.
to maintain the level of protection from catching a cold after this initial dose 500mg every 24 hours is enough.
i stopped taking the vitamin c myself and now i have the tail end of a persistent cold.
I stumbled upon this a couple of (three) years ago. and it works.
if you have a cold then 1000mg per day as above for not less than two weeks after the symptoms of the cold have gone. again you will have a couple of months defence against re-catching a cold.
it also helps to keep your home at a constant temperature no sudden temperature changes for example if it is the middle of winter wrap up warm, then make sure your home matches the same kind of temperature you maintain when fully wrapped up.
sudden temperature changes or constant temperature fluctuations can cause a cold (speaking from a life time of experience).
good luck, and get well soon!

you can't "get rid of a cold"; it has to run it's course. you can take stuff to make the symptoms more bareable, though. i usually take alka-seltzer cold and it makes me feel (at least, before it wears off) like i'm not even sick anymore.
the best thing you can do to try not to get a cold is lead a healthy lifestyle. eat right, exercise, get plenty of sleep, stay warm, and all that...you will still get sick sometimes, however...if you're exposed to the right germs, there's no escape.

i tend to get certain feelings that warn me a cold is coming on (back of my throat and nose mainly).
at this point i usually take original beechams powders (straight in, no water) taste is not great but it works...keeps it at bay usually and stops it taking over me too much.
otherwise a 'simple' cold knocks me useless for a couple of days.

The common cold is a virus, virus infections have to run their course.
