The artist did a good job, but I was thinking about going someplace else for a second tat (someone who specializes in what I want). I'd like an artist to answer this and give me an idea of how committed I should be to him for repeat business. I don't want him to be offended if I return to him for a third tat, and he sees the second that he didn't do.

I don't see why he would be upset or angered. If he saw it you could explain that you still came back to him anyway, you just wanted the specialist to do that tattoo for you.

I really don't think he would do a sh*tty job or anything either. Usually tat artists are understanding that there is someone who does a certain style better than they do.

I really don't think they'd care. They'd get it all the time - people leaving their store in the euphoric state of newly tattooed people, claiming how wonderful the art is and how they'll never have another person ink their skin... but I doubt all those people actually keep their word.
I've had three different tattooists do my tatts and none of them has asked anything much about the other tatts.
You're allowed to shop around, try out different artists and go to people who are experts in particular areas. No decent tattoo artist would begrudge you this right. You're not married to the guy (are you???) so you're not committed to only have work done by him and he's not going to cry into his cornflakes if he spots someone else's work on your skin.

Just keep the communication lines open. Explain to him you like his work (and you're going back for the 3rd tattoo he'll know you liked his work), but for the 2nd you wanted someone who specialized.

It's your body, and tattoos are permanent, so it's a big decision, stick to your guns. If he's a good artist he'll understand. Shop around until you're confident you'll get the design you want.

I don't think that they would get offended. Your like a walking billboard for their art. If someone sees your tat and they like it, they are more than likely to ask you who did it and you would say the persons name and where they work so your sending more business their way.

I am best friends with a tattoo artist and he;s only done one of my six. He is totaly cool with it because he understands other people do certain tattoos better than he could. I think you should go to someone who specializes in what you want done.

It's your body and you are paying for the ink. Unless you are dating/married to your tattoo artist I don't see a problem here. Is your mechanic offended if you take your car somewhere else for repairs?

Some care some don't, they all appreciate customer loyalty but if you want to go to someone who specializes in what you want to get then I don't think that's offensive. Plus, who says he has to know right?

If you know the guy, I can understand your concern. But if you just met him when he gave you your first tatoo, I don't think it will hurt his feelings. Maybe he won't even remember you from the first time.

he shouldnt be. If he doesnt specialize in what u want then why go to him? Most artists are pretty laid back. I mean, you wouldnt go to your dentist for breast implants would you?
