My husband is coming home on r and r really soon. He's been gone for 6 months already and he gets to take a 2 week leave. How long does it take for him to get home. If he leaves Iraq on a Sat and then goes to Kuwait to wait for a plane to fly home does that take a long time? How long did it take after you or your soldier after they or you left Iraq to get home on r and r?

THANKS!

Well that depends on where you live.

It's a 6 hour flight to Germany from Baghdad/Kuwait (a lot of troops are filtered through Ramstein AFB ) and 8-12 hours from there to the east coast. From Frankfurt to DFW is about 12-14. And go from there. If you live on the west coast it will take him 24-36 hours to get home most likely. (Also be aware it could take longer if he's on a miltary flight and not a civilian or charter hop). His 14 days should start from the time he hits the east coast/civilian airport.

I know it's hard to wait but use the time to clean house, make his favorite meal/buy groceries, pamper yourself, make travel plans, etc. AFRCenters have smokin deals if you are close to one (Hawaii, Korea & Germany). But don't be surprised if he just wants to be home with you and putter! and DON'T invite the whole family or let them invite themselves -- you need the time as a couple. If he really wants to see family and they're close enough then wait until he's been home at least 3 or 4 days. (Be aware that some guys can't handle crowded places, ie the mall, noisy places, loud sudden noises, driving or sleeping in the bed. Be patient and treasure your time! Thankfully hubby wasn't bothered by any of these - except I drove the first few days because he could tell me how to get around Baghdad safely but couldn't remember how to get to Walmart.)

Be flexible and expect changes and enjoy your time it will fly by! (& don't forget how long it took so he gets back at the right time! Don't want to be AWOL!)

OK I have yet to go on my R&R but based just upon my travel HERE, I can tell you that it will be a few days. You can easily guess that it will take your husband about 2 or 3. First he has to travel to Kuwait... not so bad, providing nothing gets messed up with his flight manifest. Kuwait is evidently where most of the problems are. They will tell you to meet in the "airport" at 0400, then tell you to come back at 1000, then back at 1800 and then say "oops sorry, come back again tomorrow ar 0400" (I have already experienced this coming to Iraq... took us 4 days to get here from Kuwait). Then he will more than likely fly to Germany, and then into the states. I slept nearly the entire trip from Maryland to Germany but it was quite a long flight. Your husband will not have concrete flight arrangements. He will be flying Space A which means they basically stick him wherever they can fit him. So there is no definate time of when he will arrive. I *strongly* suggest making sure you have your phone with you at all times so that when he calls and says "I'm at the airport, come get me" you can get there right away! :)

Good luck and enjoy your time together!

On my son's last homecoming, he left Iraq on a Saturday, sat in Kuwait until Monday or Tuesday, then flew a 3-leg trip back to the east coast... and it took 22 hours total, once they were wheels-up in Kuwait... So... less than a week, I'd say. Of course, there's no "standard" for things like this.. for security reasons. They'll let him leave when it's safe... Until then, to know he's safe, applaud the frustrating and completely intentional mis-information system...

it depends on flights in and out of Iraq, as well as civilian flights. A lot of things have to factor in....if the cargo planes have maitenance issues and weather.... as well depending on where YOU guys live. So the BEST bet is 2 days each way...so total 4 days. Hope he makes it home safely!

It can be anywhere from a day or two to a week or so. the good news is, the 2 weeks doesn't start until he gets stateside.

I believe it's 6 or 8 hours to fly from Kuwait.

As long as they have an aircraft available.

Have a great time!
