Yes, sadly it is a sign of alcoholism. It usually occurs in someone who drinks a lot, but could also happen to someone who gets really drunk a lot in a short period of time and then stops. Nerve damage or withdrawal, it's not pretty!

There are a number of causes of tremor. As many of the other answerers have pointed out, acute alcohol withdrawal is one of them. However, to give your customers the benefit of the doubt, there are other causes of tremor which can be a sign of illness or can be quite benign.
Parkinson's disease for example produces a characteristic hand tremor that looks like the individual is rolling a pill in his or her hand.
There is also a common condition known as benign essential tremor. This is a mild chronic tremor, but the individual is otherwise quite well (aside from not being able to perform surgery!). Interestingly, alcohol seems to temporarily settle this tremor down, but it is not to be confused with acute withdrawal or DT's.

Needing" a drink or drug; Doing embarrassing things when drunk or high ... a person classically goes through 4 phases: tremulousness (the shakes), ...I did know someone like that he woke up with a mouse eating some left over cheese in his beard! True story. Don't overindulge in anything!

yes my boss does. if you ever get a dui and are sent to an alcohol awareness program the will tell you all sorts of things you would never even think of. one of the things i most remember about it was learning about cauliflower nose. I had always wondered why some peoples noses looked like that and now i do.

They are having DT's. They are in detox from "lack" of alcohol and their body is shaking. They probably often have red faces and big bellies, too. That's so sad.

That's a pretty sure sign that they need to go somewhere and dry out.
Great observation.
