I Think this is really screwed up.......

I go to a High School and our dress code says that girls skirts can not be above their finger tips by our side. first of all this is not fair because some girls have longer/shorter arms than others, but thats a differnet story. Ok so there have been a nuber of girls having to call home, to have their parents bring them pants. the skirts were above their finger tips, yes. but, they were wearing leggings underneath. so why did they have to change? arn't leggings covering you up? people used to wear leggings w/o skirts back in the 80s, so wearing a skirt on top should cover up the girls butts and make the school people happy. so i dont think its fair that girls that are all coverd up should have to go home.

we have this lady that walks around the halls all day long and its her job to break up fights, catch skippers, and inforce the dress code. shes the one who makes us call home,

I can understand the school not wanting the girls to dress to revealing. BUT if the girls are wearing legging under their skirt I think that is unfair because they are covering up their legs as well as the goods. Some people have nothing better to do than nit pick.

I don't think it's fair, but then I'm totally anti-dresscode. Cover private parts is the only thing I can agree to. Dresscodes in schools are rare here where I live (Netherlands) and it does not lead to any problems, I've never heard any problems. We had people with green mohawks, one guy walked around in the old Dutch wooden shoes (which are not normal footwear anymore, for those who only know the country from the tourist guides :)), we had some people wear pretty excessive goth makeup... Now, I read about these dresscode problems in the US regularly... 'there should be dresscodes so people aren't distracted from learning' is the response of the school officials usually.... yeah, sure, let's keep the distractions to a minimum... I know none of those folks in my school ever caused a distraction that lasted longer than a few minutes, people looked up, maybe made a comment, then everyone including the teachers went back to work. On the other hand, I hear about these incidents of students fighting strict dresscodes about once a month; those are schools on the other side of the ocean, the incidents make the news, the internet, people from all over the world hear about it... but sure, there must be dresscodes 'to prevent distraction'. I have NEVER heard of ANY distraction making the news from any one of our schools here that lacks a dresscode, even locally... it's these dresscodes that CAUSE the distractions.

The other argument is 'teaching kids how to dress for success'. Oh get real, how much practice do you need wearing certain clothes... you put them on and wear them, that's it, if you wear totally different clothes the next day you put those on and wear them. I'd much rather have my kids learn not to judge people on their appearance, that's a far more important message than telling them to dress for success and that it's just fine to judge people on their looks.

The schools do this for your protection. That is not to say it is fair but, if a pervert is watching the school wile you are leaving whether you drive, ride a buss, or walk they can follow you and cause you harm just because they see you are in a skirt. The leggings can't protect you from something like that. So, I would suggest if you still want to wear skirts that come above your fingertips you either lower the place you bring the waist line to, or petition your school board to make it to where the leggings are sufficient cover up.

I can see how you'd feel that way, but look at it from the school's perpective too. There's a guideline in place, and they're just following it. It would probably be easier for the lady who walks your halls all day to ignore it instead of sending people home, but it sounds like she's just doing her job.

At the moment, leggings are in style (they were in style in the mid 80's too) but they will soon go out of style. If you feel strongly about it, maybe you can get a petition together to have an addendum to the dress code for students who wear leggings.

do you think it's fair that some kids have a dad and some don't? what's your problem? Sounds like you're attending a private school, so obviously someone cares enough about you to pay for you to go there--if not at least you have an understanding mom so be thankful for what you have and stop worrying about fair--

a good friend of mine had that happen to her and she lived a good 45 minutes from school so she called her mom and her mom told her to go to the nearest store and buy something else to wear. Problem was solved. She was in a fatal car crash when she was just 19 so was that fair? Tell me is that fair? I guarantee you life's not fair so please give us a break and just wear what you're supposed to wear already.

I personally agree with the school dress code, it could be a lot worse and you could have to wear dresses that go down to your shins or ankles.....like they did in the old days, or you could have to wear school uniforms. Be thankful that it's no worse than it already is. We had the same rules for shorts and skirts in our high school.

What kind of Nazi school do you go to? I don't think it is fair. I do think it is really screwed up. However, if those are the rules, why are the girls continuing to wear skirts too short? Aren't their parents tired of having to come to school?

your school code says "no skirts above finger tips" not "girls butts must be covered" so yes it is fair. If you want to change the rule, approach your student council.
