We can not, with any reasonable hope of success, convince everyone in the U.S. that human kind is dangerous to the environment. How ever as long as you know it and do your part to make a change then you can sleep at night knowing that all will be well in your world. I know that most people will not make the changes necessary to save our resources but because of that I collect cans and recycle all I can to keep my neighborhood clean and preserve our natural resources.

Surprizingly there is a change happening in public opinion regarding global warming and renewable energy. The abundance and severity of hurricanes in the past few year and the latest ice and snow storms to hit the Eastern Seaboard has people in the States thinking. Bush even added global issues in the State of the Union Address - so oh my god there must be hope.
Unfortunately you seem to hit the nail on the head, short-term costs less and people think they see the results now. It would seem that education for long-term solutions to problems is desperatley needed if we (globally) are to understand how fragile this earth is.

We are controlled by NIMBY folk and geriatric hippies.
