Try taking a cough suppressant syrup during the day (non-drowsy formula), and take an expectorant syrup after work is done for the day. The expectorant will help loosen the mucus in your chest to make your coughs more productive. Sitting with you head covered over a pot of steam will do the same. More productive coughs = less coughs in the long run. The suppressant should help you get through work.

Is this a one off cough or do you have a recurrent problem? Do you smoke? (STOP job done!) How long have you had the cough? Lots of missing bits that make answers difficult.

Brief summery, one off cough > 3 weeks get chest X ray to exclude any rarities. 95% chest x-rays clear. If clear the problem is probably post viral irritability, management : wait a bit longer if it doesn't stop consider 4-8 weeks of inhaled steroids. X ray positive, treat what we find.

Recurrent cough is it asthma, investigate. Never buy cough mixtures that are worthless as are herbal and natural remedies.

obvious, but if you smoke you will not be rid of this problem.
there are a lot of bugs going around lately that seem to hang around for weeks, causing such a cough.
if it has lasted a while i would go to see your GP he will know the best treatment.

i find inhaling 'vicks vapour rub' works.
seems a lot of people out of this area have never heard of it,
put a spoonful of vapour rub in very hot water, in a large-ish bowl.
lean over the bowl and inhale slowly....cover your head with a towel for best effect....breathe out and in slowly.
it might get too much so sit up and breathe as normal, when you feel capable, back over the bowl, the vapour seems to clear the airways (well, it does for me) and helps to clear a cough.

Go to the doctors and get some antibiotics if needed and also ask him or her to sign you of work for a week so you can rest and try and get rid of the infection
