My advice would be to ....
- Make sure to get the right size for your area
- Make sure to get one that is covered by a warranty and
- Make sure the installer guarantees that they install the air con correctly and do not void your warranty. If the install is done wrong and your unit breaks down, you could end up with the manufacturer saying its the installers problem and the installer saying its the manufacturers problem and end up with no one doing anything to fix it. This tends to occur more with the not so popular brands that don't often provide good aftermarket service, so a reliable brand name can also be a benefit.
I found Mitsubishi's are quite good. Not all that flashy looking but reliable. Hasn't broken down yet.
I have tried some not so popular brands like DL and the experience was appalling. The motor broke and DL refused to fix it even though it was covered under warranty. They came out and fixed something else that wasn't the problem. Then they refused to even take our calls, and changed the reason for not fixing it 3 times and later created a $150 service fee for the warranty job and refused to try and work out the matter with us. We ended up having to bring in a solicitor and then all of a sudden they said its under warranty now and we were gonna fix it in two weeks. This was over about 3 months. Needless to say I would never go with a unknown brand again. At least you know a large brand has pretty good service.

The brand doesnt matter so much as the person who installs it, but the more expensive machines have better fail safe devices. A good tech can tell you what each has.
A good technician makes the biggest difference.
Just a small mistake, like letting in a little moisture will create acid inside the system and over 2-3 years, it will eat the copper out of the lines and deposit it in the compressor, which slowly wears it out.
A good tech will also know exactly how to charge the system correctly, because charging a little too much can let liquid refrigerant back into the pump and kill the reed valve, which will require an entire compressor replacement if the pump is hermetically sealed (the smaller the system the more likely).
Charging it a little low results in burn out due to too high levels of superheat.
Just go with a decent tech and it will be worth it in the long run. Paying an extra $10-20 an hour can be well worth it.

I like Trane. It is NOT inexpensive, but is built very well and quiet. Just remember this - you get what you pay for.

In A/C trade, GOODMAN brand is known as the lowest of the low. (but actually perform well when installed by qualified installer) Nordyne type (sold under variety of brand names) are sort of generic A/C favored by contractors. Trane, American Standard (same thing) are at the top. Payne, Carrier, Bryant are somewhere in the middle.

Whatever the brand you choose, MAKE SURE you select a good and qualified installer. It makes bigger difference than the brand you choose.

dont go for LG - it looks cute but sucks big time...
carrier's a good option though it's a bit expensive but awesome cooling capacity
hyundai's pretty good too... not very expensive
by far i think hitachi's atom is the best - you can have 2 indoor units with the same outdoor unit but it's freakingly expensive...
i'd suggest you to go in for carrier or hyundai
