Demand in the US is high so imports from other countries fill that gap.

Most of the produce stays in the US for home consumption or used by the food processing plants.

For meat consumption, what I've read is that the US consumes more meat than it produces. Hence, more meat is coming into the country (imports). The US exports about 5% of what it produces - before the mad cow scare, I believe Japan was a major buyer of US beef. Currently, Russia is the largest buyer of US Beef.
