Does anyone know if there are any bad side effects if the use of it is prolonged? I know the common side effects but not for long term use.

Where to begin...?

Prolonged use of Xanax and the effects of stopping are still being discovered. Always check the information leaflet you get from the pharmacy. It's a controlled substance, not a narcotic.

Memory loss, chemical dependancy, more likely to abuse other medications, respiratory problems, inability to verbalize coherent thoughts, disruption of speech pattern, etc...

Assuming this isn't being used to get high, I'd find another non-addictive medication. Try Vistaril. Least side-effects, and not addictive.

Oh, and coming off Xanax and going into withdrawl? One of the most unpleasant, painful, and emotionally agonizing experiences of my life. You might as well be a crack whore or shoot up heroin. Not worth it.

Long term use of Xanax can cause physical and psychological dependence, especially if you're taking more than 4 mg a day. It can also cause reduced liver and kidney function. You'll need to have a blood test periodically to test for those functions. It may also cause a low red blood cell and neutrophil count (a type of white blood cell), making you more susceptible to infections and anemia.
