John Prine wrote "Angel from Montgomery". Bonnie Raitt sings it - but when John sings it, it just sounds so funny - to hear a man saying "I am an old woman named after my mother".

Aside from odd lyrics - the key can be changed, and vocal ranges aren't necessarily male and female. I think if it's a song well suited to your tastes and voice, sing it.

I have had to do this for a Christmas play, and although it was very difficult at first, the one thing you have to realize is that a man's voice will be in a different octive and you will not sound like he does (nor should you want to). In my experience, I sang first with his voice, to find the range that I would need. After I got that down, I sang to just the music and made the song my own by stretching out different words or cutting others short. (The song I had to sing was a crazy hard rendition of "Oh Holy Night"). The man singing it had a very deep voice, and mine is rather high. I just tried to match his words to the music, and then I took it from there. It really is all about you making the song comfortable for you to sing with. I didn't change the key of the song, only which octive I sang it in.
Hope that helps a little!

It is not a problem provided you make sure the song is in your range in your octave. If it is out of your range, an easy fix is to simply change the key the song is in. Depending on your accompanist, it shouldn't be a problem. Another solution would be to find someone to arrange a song for you so it fits your voice.

The range is how far up and down your voice can go. The key is the tonal center for the piece. To change the key of a piece, you change every note in the piece the same amount to go up or down depending on your voice.

You can sing the same notes or vocals in a different octave. This is common. It would be the same as a male singing it only higher than intended.

Of course it can be done. One of my favourite songs was sang by both a male and a female. Its called 'remember the promise you made'. I think it was first sang by c'ock robin and then later kate ryan. Take care and have a nice day and may ALLAH Ta'ala bring you and everyone else onto the correct path if you arnt already, Ameen...

I believe that it is ok for them to sing the songs, keeping in mind that that they should make it their own. Trying to mimic another artist usually is not well received.
