TROPICAL FRUIT FLAN

4 tbsp. butter
3 tbsp. cold water

6 packets equal
1 tsp. brandy extract

Roll out on floured surface to 12 inch diameter circle, 1/8 inch thick. Line greased and floured 9 inch tart pan with pastry. Trim edges. Cover pastry with 9 inch circle of wax paper; prick holes through paper and pastry with fork. Cover waxed paper with uncooked dried beans or rice to prevent air bubbles. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 10 minutes, remove dried beans or rice and wax paper. Continue baking 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool. Carefully remove from pan if desired.
Custard: Bring milk and butter to a boil. Blend eggs with flour in food processor or mixer until thick and light colored. Add small amount of hot milk mixture to eggs and flour. Blend egg mixture into remaining hot milk in saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat. Blend in Equal and brandy extract. Spoon into pastry shell.

Topping: Arrange fruit over custard.

Here's a really good cake that's quite simple & fits your description (people flip when i make this!)

Summer Berry Chocolate Cake
Chocolate cake, prepared in two 8 inch round pans (recipe follows)
3 cups vanilla yogurt
2 cups whipped topping
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 ounce dark chocolate, grated
Berrys of your choice, prefferably a combination of strawberries, rasberries, & blueberries

While cake is baking, whisk together the yogurt, whipped topping, and vanilla. Reserve in the fridge. Wash all the berries. Chop the strawberries into small wedges. When cake is baked and cooled, turn out one layer onto a serving dish. Spread with about half the yogurt mixture. Cover with most of the berries and about 3/4 of the chocolate. Place the other layer of the cake on top. Spread with the remainder of the yogurt. Decorate the cake with the berries and top with chocolate.

For the Cake:
You can either buy cake mix and prepare according to the box, or use this recipe:
CHOCOLATE CAKE

1 cup pudding
6 cups flour
3 eggs
2 cups warm milk
3 cups cocoa powder
3 cups melted sugar (melt by heating with water until becomes saucy and all sugar is dissolved)

Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Mix together milk and cocoa and return to heat. Mix together pudding and sugar. Combine wet and dry ingredients; beat together.
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition at medium speed. Do not alternate speeds between mixing.

Bake at 350F degrees.

Remove from oven when tooth pick comes out clean.

It almost sounds like you are describing a trifle.

This is a good one to begin with.

Berries:
1 pint blueberries
1 pint strawberries, hulled and cut into thick slices
2 pint raspberries
1 lemon, juiced
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
Lemon Cream:
1 quart whipping cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (11-ounce) jar lemon curd
1 cup store bought pound cake, slices 1/2-inch thick

Place the berries into a large bowl and sprinkle with half of the lemon juice. Lightly toss.
Combine the berries, sugar, cornstarch and remaining lemon juice in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a simmer and cook just until the berries begin to break down and give up their juices, about 3 minutes. Take the berries off the heat and let cool; the mixture should thicken up as is cools.

In a clean bowl, whip the cream with the sugar and the vanilla to soft peaks. Put the lemon curd into a second bowl and stir in a little of the whipped cream to loosen it. Then fold in the rest of the cream.

To assemble the trifle, spoon a layer of the lemon cream into a large glass bowl. Add a layer of pound cake, breaking the slices into pieces that fit. Then soak the cake with a layer of berries and their juices. Keep going to make 3 or 4 more layers, depending on the size of the bowl, finishing with a layer of lemon cream. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

If you go to the FoodNetwork.com they have several good recipes and they desribe them by how difficult they are.

Well if you're thinking tiramisu, I don't have the recipe for that. But your ingredients could be used for a trifle. Just layer a glass bowl with cut up cake and layer with custard. top with fruit such as peaches. layer of whipped cream. repeat layers and ouila, a lovely trifle. (you could use pudding in place of custard as well)..

i haven't had pears and custard, possibly thats a close-by concern? i think of bananas and custard is scrumptious nevertheless. I used to hate fruit cake while i became youthful even though it is not undesirable as quickly as I has some superb icing on it or a topping etc.
