I've heard of "crack addicted" babies born of mothers who used the drug. But I thought cocaine did not cause an actual physical addiction. I didn't think abruptly stopping it's use would cause physical withdrawel. I know exhaustion results when the drug is abruptly withdrawn following many days/nights of continuous use, but I'm confused about babies born "addicted". Someone set me straight, please.

The person who suggested google was right. It is not physically addictive, does not produce acute withdrawel. Symptoms of abrupt cessation are opposite those produced by the drug. Abruptly stopping cocaine results in behaviors: lethargy, increased appetite, and depression, to name a few. But no withdrawel occurs. Addiction is strictly psychological!!

Yes it is very addicting and yes crack babies born to mothers who used the drug have to be monitored carefully and are often born addicted to it. The cocaine enters the babies blood via the placenta and when they are born their supply of this very addciting drug is abruptly cut off so they go through withdrawl.

I'm don't know of all the symptons but people I know who have tried quitting would show signs of withdrawl, such as intense shaking and they would get dehydrated after a certain amount of time of not having it. It depends on the person's body and how often they had been using before how bad and intense these things happen to them, but almost everyone I've known or heard of has had this happen. Also, a lot of them have either ended up in the hospital, having some kind of problem that was the cause or effects of these syptoms, or would go back on drugs to stop the pain.
I'm pretty sure that many babies who's mothers are on crack have birth defects and also have pregnancy complications.

Any drug the mother takes while pregnant is passed through the placenta and fed to the baby.

Crack is not only physically but mentally addicting.

This next part taken from the internet.

*******The internal physical crack cocaine abuse symptoms are more difficult to detect. These symptoms include cardiovascular symptoms as well as physiological symptoms such as irregular heartbeats and depression. An irregular heartbeat that is produced by crack cocaine use can lead to heart attacks, strokes and possibly death. *********

Cocaine, like most other drugs, is one of the most addicting out there. I was an addict to coke for about two years. Withdrawls include headaches, nausea, diarreah, snappiness, etc.

As for babies, they can be born with a much more addicted prone personality if their mother is an addict, yes.

It is possible to win a gold medal at the World Oldympics, but it doesn't happen for most of us. It's much more likely that the addiction will ruin you and your relationship than it is that you can cure the addictionl. However you just might be able to convince the addict to get treatment. That would be the most loving thing you could do.

Of course it is addictive. It's a chemical that manipulates brain function. The babies are addicted because their brains are already used to the drug and when they don't get the drug anymore through their mother's placenta, they go through withdrawls. This is kind of a stupid question. Did you not learn this growing up in school?
