Now Derek Acorah has been proved a fake why do people believe in such silly drivel. My brother met him and he told him a load of lies so I had my doubts yet never knew just how fake he was. I realise there are some desperate people finding it hard to accept loss and I think its disgusting to con people who are vulnerable at these times. My mate was psychic and had visions of things that came true yet he had may be 2 visions a year and didn`t make up nonsense every week on a stage to make money may be thats because he wasn`t fake

Evolutionarily, we were designed to view cause and effect. This helped us become such a powerful force on earth (build weapons, build homes). Unfortunately, often times, this causality mechanism misfires. We hear a psychic make 3 out of 20 accurate predictions and we believe in them. The same way people speak of the power of prayer and can name maybe 10 prayers that worked (out of hundreds).

People believe in psychics because they really WANT to. The whole thing is such a lovely idea and most appealing to those who feel the need to believe - the gullible, the vulnerable, the weak ...
People believe in a supernatural entity for the same reasons.

you ask why people believe and then go on to say your mate's visions are true
so what is it
do you believe in psychics or not then ?
we all know Acorah is fake , we have known that for years
but that doesnt make every psychic fake
your friends 2 visions a year tells you that
i have been doing psychic and mediumship readings for years and recieved as many also
many amazing , wonderfully accurate readings
stuff I had to get confirmed by other family members
and Randi would swear black was white if it brought him notoriety ... he is as bad as Acorah himself
I know many people who have approached Randi only to be ignored

People believe in psychics because ultimately they're desperate for the universe to not be this big, complex, hostile place.

Unfortunately paying a douche a few hundred bucks will not change that.

people who use psychics are usually confused and unhappy with their life. They want reassurance that something good will happen to them. They want to be told that they are going to find thei perfect man win lots of money and get a great job. I believe that it is a form of escapism and that you are right, there are some con artists who just take advantage and exploit sad and lonely people.

Because they like to believe that people have more control over things then just what they can see. They also just like the idea that things don't end right when you die and psychics are a way for people to believe that we still have an impact and are still heard when we die.

People who refuse to stand firm on anything for any matter of time always find themselves looking and hoping desperately to know what is ahead. Therefore many turn to psychics, spells, witchcraft, etc.

People have a need to hold onto something. It gives comfort...but as you say it is false comfort.
All of us have a (sort of) faith in something.
Someone said that those who do not believe in God do not believe nothing but can easily end up believing anything!

I believe in physics and every other form of science. Probaly because our whole world is built up of science. If it isn't built up of science or there isn't evidence for it being there it simply does not exist.
