I usually save it and freeze it to make coffee shakes or to add to iced cola late at night for a quick jolt.

This is an interesting question. I think that most people empty it into the sink and start over the next day with a new cup.
Most of the time it is because it doesn't taste good the next day.
I am one of those few people who use the coffee that is left regardless of when it was brewed. I am the only one in my house that drinks coffee and I try to brew only 4 cups a day so the quantity is about as small as I can make it without having very weak coffee. I usually do not go past two days as there just isn't enough coffee.
My recommendations if you decide to keep the coffee after it is first brewed are the following:
1) Put it in a coffee decanter to keep warm instead of keeping it on the burner
2) consume the coffee within three days or refrigerate it after the first day so that it will stay fresher.
3) do not keep heating it after it is brewed unless you intend to drink it all within the first two hours as the coffee gets burned after 20 minutes.
4) have more people over so that you can consume the coffee when it is fresh.
5) for small quantities of coffee, buy coffee bags for individual servings.
