A Yahoo news item several months ago reported a comparison by experts of the same topics/entries in the Encyclopedia Brittanica and Wikipedia and found them to be the same in error rates. There is no 100% reliable source anywhere.

Actually, many sources online are subject to change and are therefore unreliable. But most can back up the information they offer with original sources.

It's fairly reliable!
1. I've caught a couple of mistakes, which were just copied/pasted from other misinformation on the Internet. I fixed them, which is what I'm supposed to do!
2. The biggest problems I've seen were when someone deliberately and obviously trashed an article. But -- since the trashing was obvious, I was able to go surf elsewhere to look for the info.

It's not really THAT unreliable. Most of the crap gets removed very quickly, and the remainder is usually very easy to pick out and ignore.

I use it because it is convenient and has fairly well written extensive entries that are perfect for general consumption. It may not be some academic journal, but it is perfect for looking up something you've read in a book or maybe read more about a country on the news, etc.

i have wondered the same thing. i usually use google, but occasionally a wikipedia result comes out.

because it's usually one of the first results when you search on google.
and there are usually ways you can tell if it's reliable.
