My boyfriend of five years and I are looking into marriage. After lots of thought and consideration we have decided that we really hate all the stress and cost of most weddings and would rather just get married at a courthouse. We are very no-nonsense people and this just seems to be the most appropriate for the two of us.

However, I don't really know how to go about a courthouse wedding. This is a first marriage for both of us and everyone we know has had a conventional ceremony. Do we need to get a marriage license ahead of time or will one be provided at the courthouse? How much do these weddings normally cost?

Also, who should we invite to share this event with us? We were thinking our parents and two friends each since we don't have siblings. Should we invite more or is that too many?

Any info would be helpful.

Congrats! Please call your local courthouse to get the information. Just dress up nice that day, you may need (depending on your area) to get a marriage license at least three days previous to the wedding. The judge, ask what his/her fee is for weddings. The number of guests you have mentioned, the parents and two friends, seems about right. You can see about a reception (maybe at your parent's house) afterwards (or on a later date), and have as many people there as you would like (and can fit). Take care.

It might be different for every state. In Florida, you go down to the courthouse to get your marriage license and three days later you are able to come back to get married (courthouse wedding). It's a one time fee for the license when you apply for it and not to much to the wedding. For most states, if you wish to have guests, they allow seating for a certain amount of people and some states require you to have two witnesses. This is what my husband and I did when we got married and much later we had a simple wedding.

I did the same thing. You need to get you license ahead of time and also scheduale the wedding date. Just call the court house and ask some questions they can tell you everything. I think it was on $40 but it probably depends on where you live. We just had our parents and siblings come. We probably would have had a friend or two but just family was a lot(i have step parents). the court might have a limit on how many people can come. I wore a dress and he wore a tux(i work in formal wear it was free). I had a small thing of flowers. It was very nice and cheap. I dont ever regret it.

everything depends on the state u live in las vegas is really easy. courthouse open 7 days was 24 hours but closes at midnight now even holidays. but then u walk across the street and if u dont have a witness w u everyone in line just "is a witness' for e other and it isnt that long. some states require blood tests not vegas though. nothing like a vegas wedding on 7/7/07! Congratulations.

You mean- Justice Of The Peace wedding?
I have had one, and it was nice. You can invite all your friends if choose to, have at Courthouse, City Hall, They can come to your place, any place you require them to come, or at their home.
Mine was at their home, nice setting in back yard with about 30 people.
It cost Canadian $75.00 License (You can buy 3 months in advance at any City Hall or Insurance Office) then to pay Justice Judge cost I believe about $100.00 (It is custom to give a tip to your liking for the good job severed).
Now you will receive a paper registration certificate there after wedding but need to send off for licensed copy. (Judge may do this or you). Our came in mail 2 to 3 weeks later.
No waiting period for marriage, you can have the day you get the licenses.
Good luck and congratulations on your up coming wedding.

I had a court house wedding, in south carolina, you have to apply for the license 24 hours before you can get married at the court house. If you want you can have ppl there, but when I got married, it was just me and my now ex husband. The judge asked if we wanted to go through a ceremony, but we said no, we just signed the marriage license, kissed, and that was it. It took about 15 minutes.

You do need a license first,..then go to your local magistrate and ask if they are willing to perform the wedding...usually its no more than $100, plus a token gift of say $25. Ask the magistrate how many people will attend, usually from 4 to 20.
You should ask your grandparents as well, they may not attend, but would love an invite.
This is a very short ceremony...upwards of 15 minutes.
But it is very no nonsense and easy...
Good luck:)

As little or as much as you want to make of it.

You can go sign the papers and in some places wait three days and get a blood test for some places as well. then go back and p[ledge yourselves to each other and pay the man.

Some places it takes about a half hour for everything and you are on your way. Go to Nevada and have fun as well it takes about a half h our there as well.

Invite your close friends and family. You just need to purchase the marriage license.
