my mother just became a us citizen and i will automatically become one soon because i'm not 18 yet, but i want to shortten my name and i only have about 2 month to become 18 years old how can i change my name? should i wait to become a citizen and change my name after i turn 18 or is there any way to change my name before i apply for my us passport (us citizenship)?

Your question is generally answered in FAQ#18 on page 11 of the Guide to Naturalization. Go to the link below. The link to the Guide to Naturalization is the first "related link" on the right hand side.

I would contact the USCIS office that is handling your parent's naturalization to see if they could help anyways.

Ha. Know how you feel. Yekaterina. Thats my full name. Except now that they changed from the german to french translation it is now Ekaterina in my passport. How wonderful when my documents are half and half, lol. Anyway, I would say take it one thing at a time. Right now with the whole process of application it may be too complicated to attempt a name change. Wait until you are 18, a citizen, and then gather up your document and legally change your name. I am actually not sure whether you can do it before becoming a citizen.
