We all have a "social ego" which is to say that we all have a perception of ourselves that is based on an assuption of all the views that people could have about us. It can be hurt just as bad as our own personal "ego" or pretty much our animal "ego" but it is based largly on our own view of ourselves. Ether way people don't like to be put down and well do anything to protech the "social ego" even if that means laying or fakin there real selves. Can't really blame people for that society has made a mockery of personal relationships and turned them into something that the heart can't really feel is natural. How, why, and what that is exactly is beyond the scope of this answer but keep in mind people well do what they can to protect themselves. Doesn't mean you have to take it personally or even let people like that into your life.
