Wild Horse Names

2016-11-09 21:13:57 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Here in the US, wild horses are called Mustangs, which is a word that comes to us from Spanish. In Spanish, the name is mesteno ( normally, there would be a little squiggled line over the n in this word, but my computer won't allow me to put one in) which means "wild horse". Wild horses in other countries have other names. Australia has the Brumbies, and Mongolia (which is an automomous part of China) has Prezywalski and Cherski horses, who are considered by most experts to be the ancestors of all modern horse breeds. In Europe, there is a type of horse known as the Tarpan, which figures very prominently in several of the Russian breeds, such as the Orlov Trotter. At one time, there was also a wild horse that roamed the deserts of the Mideast, and this animal is thought to have been the ancestor of the modern Arabian and Thoroughbred breeds by some experts. I don't know the name of this horse, however.

There is only one truly wild horse left, the Prezwalski's Horse from Mongolia.

You are probably thinking of the "wild" horses in the Western US, the Mustang. In the eastern US, there is the Chincoteague Pony (remember the book Misty of Chincoteague?). These ponys live on Assateague island, off the coast of Maryland, they have an annual roundup which is done by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Dept to keep the numbers down.

The Brumby horses are "wild" in Australia.

All the other horses we think of as wild are really feral. They were once domestic, but escaped and reverted back to a "wild" state.

What is the wild horse called?

There are many feral horses under different names in various parts of the world. In addition to those names, there's also the semi-wild Camargue horse in france. The chincotegue ponies are also semi-wild and are rounded up each year. Actually, the ponies are separated on Assategue island by a fence. Those south of the fence are semi wild and are rounded up each year and some sold. The ones north of the fence are kept as feral animals by the park service and are not permitted to breed and are not cared for or rounded up.

I believe the last truly wild horse is the Pryzwalski. There are plenty of feral horses called wild, those are the mustangs and brumbies and other formerly domesticated breeds.
