Hi,

When you want to file for an amendment of a 2005 tax return, I understand I need to file 1040X. What attachments go with, do I need to attach a copy of my original 1040 and also the new 1040, or just the 1040X with the concerned schedules enough.

Please advice.

Thanks

You attach the old 1040 and any other schedules that change from the 1040X. For example, if your mistake wasn on itemized deductions, you would attach the 1040 and the Schedule A. You wouldn't attach, for example, sched. B, C or D since they didn't change. There is no new 1040, just the old 1040 and the 1040x. Remember, you may also need to ammend your state return.

The 1040X with all schedules that have changed attached is sufficient. Do not include the old 1040 or a "new" 1040.

Send the 1040X with supporting forms, the forms that show the change you made in the tax return. you don't need to send the original, the IRS already has it.

THERE IS NO NEED TO SEND THE 104O JUST THE 1040X WITH WHATEVER CHANGE. EXAMPLE IF YOU ADDED A DEPENDENT SEND THE FORM EIC AND FORM 8812 IF YOU ARE GETTING CREDITS AS WELL. IN OTHER WORDS WHAT EVER CHANGES SEND THAT FORM.
