i don't know of any home things you can do other then ice.
but i do know that you can buy OTC oral cream that will help the pain a great deal its called ambisol and you can if you want also get some Tylenol 1 by asking the druggist they are behind the counter .
the ambisol i am not spelling that right can make a huge difference you should just buy some of that tonight.

I'M A DENTAL HYGIENIST. I'M ANSWERING THIS IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ THIS. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE EVER PUT AN ASPIRIN DIRECTLY ON THE TOOTH OR GUM!!! ASPIRIN IS AN ACID AND THAT WILL CAUSE AN ACID BURN ON THE TISSUE. THE BURN CAUSES TEMPORARY RELIEF BECAUSE IT LITERALLY BURNS OFF THE NERVE ENDINGS BUT THE PAIN AND DAMAGE IS MUCH, MUCH WORSE AS THEY REGROW. PLEASE DON'T DO THIS!!! ALSO, FOR AN OVER THE COUNTER PAIN RELIEVER, USE AN IBUPROFEN PRODUCT SUCH AS MOTRIN OR ADVIL. TYLENOL ISN'T AS EFFECTIVE ON ORAL PAIN. NEVER TAKE AN ASPIRIN FOR DENTAL PAIN, EVEN SWALLOWING IT AS DIRECTED, BECAUSE IF YOU END UP NEEDING THE TOOTH EXTRACTED, HAVING TAKEN ASPIRIN CAN AFFECT HOW WELL YOU CLOT AFTER THE EXTRACTION. IT IS A BLOOD THINNER AND MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR THE BLEEDING TO STOP AFTER THE TOOTH IS REMOVED.....MANY DENTISTS WON'T EVEN DO AN EXTRACTION UNTIL THE ASPIRIN IS OUT OF THEIR SYSTEM AND THAT CAN DELAY TREATMENT FOR A COUPLE DAYS. Whew! Ok, back to regular type now. I was very disturbed that so many people were recommending that old wives tale, I thought the general population has been educated about that. I'm so sorry your husband is in such pain. The most I can recommend is to use the Ibuprofen (as long as he doesn't have any kidney problems, he can take 4 pills, 4 times a day maximum...that is the prescription strength). Don't use warm compresses or such, that will draw more blood to the area and increase swelling, pain and throbbing. Ice placed on the outside of the mouth, on the face near the painful area is a better choice.
Your dentist will do an xray and exam and will probably put him on an antibiotic before he will be able to do any treatment. But he should be able to give him pain meds or if the problem is an abcess, he can open that and drain it which provides immediate relief. Good luck to him (and you...for having to deal with a husband in pain....that's no picnic!)

Take a little clove oil, apply it on a cotton swab and place it on the tooth which is hurting, it wont have a pleasant taste, but it is tolerable, and it did relieve a very acute pain that I had. Also take a painkiller, anything whih contains Ibuprofen and paracetamol.

Omg I did not notice how many people were talking about Aspirin, ther person above me is rite, do not apply it on the tooth under any condition.

Call your local emergency room and ask if they have a dentist. Some university hospitals have a dentist on call. Some ppl take tylenol or aleve for a toothache but make sure you read the package before using it. Those pills won't fix the cause of the pain, however.

Try extra strenghth Tylenol, then two hours later, aspirin, then 2 hours later tylenol. I don't know if he has any allergies- so be careful. Ora jel makes an over the counter jel to put on the tooth. If you drink, alcohol is great for tooth pain.

Anbosol. Look for it and other oral pain medications in your pharmacy. Also an anti-inflammatory pain reliever, like aspirin. Which will reduce the swelling that causes the pain. For the bacteria in the mouth, a salt water rinse is often recommended by dentists. All 3 will should help a lot.

Either have him bite on an aspirin until the pain subsides, or go get him some old fashion chewing tobacco. A big wad of tobacco wrapped around the infected area has worked for me several times. The tobacco seems to "draw" the infection and pain out. Temporarily!

I really hope that this works, it did for me one time. rub a goody powder directly over the tooth that is hurting and let it set on the tooth for as long as you can stand it,then gentle rinse mouth out with warm water with a little baking soda.Hope that he gets it taken care of immediately

Got any whiskey in the house? Tell him to take a mouthful and hold it over the tooth for as long as possible. Sorry, I know the pain all too well. Hope he gets it sorted tomorrow
