Who thinks that purebred dogs are smarter than mixed breed dogs, or vice versa? I'm just curious

Intelligence between dogs of the same breed vary- and intelligence can be influenced by the parents of the dog (no matter what breed) AND the environment it was raised in.

Mental "reasoning" is much different than working instinct. You won't find huskies retrieving 3 bumpers in a row, like you would a golden retriever. Does that equate to intelligence? No- man has relied on a dog's instinct more than intelligence.

You will find super intelligent pure breds of any breed, and super intelligent dogs of the mixed variety.
You will also find "delinquents" (although endearing) in any breed, any mix, or any gender.

Intelligence has nothing to do with purity whatsoever.

For the sake of argument let us just assume the breeder of the pure bred dog is good and doesn't harm the breed or do anything he/she is not supposed to do.
Taking that into consideration, I think the pure bred dog that comes from a very reputable breeder is most likely and will probably be the most intelligent dog. There are good and bad to both, of course, but given a choice, I will take the pure bred dog.
The pure bred is bred for certain qualities and standards. That is what you are going to get when you purchase the dog. That is why you spend money on this dog. You are paying for what you want out of an animal.
When you get a mixed breed, you don't know what you are getting. It could be good or bad. That is the chance you take. You could get the best of both breeds or the worst.

If you purchase a pure bred from a breeder and anything is wrong or something bad happens you can return the dog within a certain amount of time. They stand behind their dogs.

I want to know what I am getting. I don't like surprises when the dog (s) are living in my house and sharing my life.

i work at boarding kennels, and have found mixes to be in general a bit smarter, and definitely more hardy.
pure breeds have been bred for looks, not brains and health.
the exception of course the specific breeds like german shepards and huskies and malamutes.
in general i find the specific house breeds like pugs, bulldogs, shihtzu, poodles, etc, are not all that clever.
again you can argue that dogs are as clever as their owner lets them be. if an owner doesnt stimulate them and stretch their minds, even a husky will be stupid.

It really depends on what sort of "smarts" you are looking for. I grew up with all sorts of pure breds (German shepards, dachshunds, snauzers) and I adopted a mixed breed. He's just as smart and loving as any of the others. I would encourage adopting from a local shelter, pound, or adoption agency, but that's just me. You can find nice pure breeds at most locations.

Different breeds have "mental capabilities" geared toward what they were bred to do. My breed are very clever hunters and, being bred to hunt on their own, are not very good at following my requests. My friends Border Collies, being bred to follow the direction of people, are great working with people as a team, but are poor at hunting.

With a mix, who the heck knows, you would have to judge each as an individual.

some mixed breed dog's are smarter! It just depends on what you get. As far as purebreds go I don't think there smarter then any other dog.

I think any dog is just as capable as being intelligent. All dogs are bred for different things, so what is your definition of intelligence?

If I had to pick, I say mixed breeds, but that's just because some breeders so not pay attention to blood lines, and the risk of inbreeding is higher.

I have maltese dogs and a morkie. The morkie is a mix of
maltese and yorkie. I have to say that none are different
mentally. The mix is actually quite smart and was easy to
train. I say it all depends on the owner.

i think its all how the dog is raised pure breeds i would say are more likely to be smarter but its all in the breed and two different "smart" breeds mixed could make a really smart dog.

it depends on how INBRED the lines are for the purebreds alot of breeders inbreed too far just to "keep the line pure" thats why alot of people say that mixbreeds are smarter just because of that inbred factor... most breeders say it doesnt matter but look at people who inbreed ............ cant be healthy............... i have two mix breeds and my friend has a purebred and her dog is STUPID .......... course could just be the breed of dog.......... lol....... hope this helps
