Even tho I don't care for sweet potatoes, they ARE better FOR you. Usually, the brighter the color of a fruit or vegetable the more vitamins and nutrients it has. Like broccoli, radishes, carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, berries, kiwi, etc. The more brown or beige foods have less. I usually try to make it look like my plate is full of colors, and I don't even have to count calories. However many argue sweet potatoes are high on the glycemic index but so are regular ones, so if you have to have potatoes, the brighter colored ones are better for you. Eventually even if you prefer the regular ones over sweet ones (like me), I think it all comes down to making sure you have them in moderation. If you eat healthy all the time you can splurge every once in a while.

Sweet potatoes are better fot you because they have more fiber. The more color the potato has the better it is for you. The yukon gold is better than the russet. If you can find peruvian blue (it is actually a purple potato) it has the fiber of a sweet potato but tastes more like a white potato - so that is actually the best potato.

As always it depends what you cook with them. Sweet potatoes have more fiber and antioxidants but add butter and marshmallows and you'd be better off witha plain baked potato. A sweet potato with a little butter is obviously better than french fries.
All things in moderation.
