My left leg has been hurting an awful lot. The right one is slightly sore, but it hurts just to think about walking on the left one. I was running a lot Friday night, but most of the time I catch up on overworked muscles within 36 hours.

The back of my calf hurts when I pull it perpendicular to my leg. Any suggestions as to what this might be?

It sounds like a pulled muscle.
If the calf is reddened and warm, or has a red streak, or if when you pull your toes up toward your knee you have a sharp pain in the calf, you could have a deep vein thrombosis or a clot.

Have you taken some tylenol or ibuprofen? Soaked in a warm tub? If when you wake up in the morning, the calf is still so painful, you may want to have it checked out. If you have symptoms of a clot, as mentioned above, you shouldn't wait to be seen by a doc.

If you have been running a lot, you may have injured a tendon and have tendonitis. You could also have overworked a muscle or muscle group in your leg, in which case a good deep tissue massage is the best solution, but make sure you find a good therapist that will warm up the muscles before the massage, either with an electric blanket, warm wet towels or a pad of sand, warmed on microwave. Ask questions before getting your session, find out if the person is qualified enough.
If the pain persists see a physio therapist or your family doctor.
Good luck with it.
