In the US, the sheltering of orphaned children is not usually provided by the old "Oliver Twist" concept of an institutional orphanage. Rather, children without parents who can care for them properly, or without living parents and without other family who can care for them, are placed in foster care until they are formally adopted or until they reach 18.

It depends on the state. Some states say that you are an adult at the age of 17, so therefore, children stay in a orphanage till they're 17, others don't get out until their 18.
