Can I agree that religion does some good? Of course it does. Plenty of it.
That it makes some people happy? Obviously, though often in the course of doing wrong. But that's not unique to religion, of course.
It's still false. My issue with religion is the common assumption that there's something wrong/evil/dishonest with me for not accepting it. If the religious folks would just leave me alone, I'd have no beef at all with them. Everyone has plenty of false beliefs, and I'm not so silly as to think they all need to be fixed. But they certainly shouldn't direct public policy.
I agree with Eleventy that it's sad that people need this kind of thing to be motivated to do good, but you've got to admit that it's not surprising. People aren't nearly as rational as we like to think, and we're motivated by stories and the like more than we are by the facts.

Since Natural Selection did not vote it out, it MUST have been beneficial at first. Now all it does is damage so it must be abolished.
"The problem is, like other fundamentalists, Dawkins won't stop talking when he's finished talking sense."
- He's an idiot. Richard Dawkins is ALWAYS making sense the WHOLE WAY THROUGH.

I will not tell my 4 year old that I think playing with dolls is boring. But I am sure she will grow out of it, and she does not have the political power to make me play with dolls, too. Unfortunately, many of the religious never grow out of their superstitions, and do wield considerable political power for their dogma.

Definitely. It seems many charities are religion-based and this cannot be ignored. I still think it is sad to think that these same people would not offer their services without outside reasons.
