Police Officers are paid to do a job, and they should not let their personal beliefs be a barrier. They Chose that line of work knowing full well what their job would entail...Providing security for a pro-choice rally is not much different than when officers have to handle a nasty criminal, its not something they want to do, but nevertheless is part of the job...Similar to those who, according to religious beliefs, certain meats cant be held or consumed, yet that particular individual made a choice to work at a restaurant where they knew, they'd be required to handle such products..It comes down to choices...The cook, chose his job, as did the cop....And they need to do their job to the best of their abilities, WITHOUT personal objection.

Assuming that you mean anti-abortion demonstrators, or officers that are anti-abortion, no they should not be excused from this duty because of their beliefs. They have a sworn duty to protect and serve, not to pick and choose who should be protected and served. Protecting all lives is their job, and has nothing to do with the demonstration. They would not be considered part of the demonstration by reasonable people.

A good police officer should not allow personal beliefs to interfere with the job. There obligation to serve and protect should be there highest priority. If the police officer can not keep the two separate, then they should not be involved with law enforcement.

Police officers are in place to control crowds of any sort. That's why they are called Peace Officers. They maintain the peace and I don't know if there is any case of a department offering an officer a conscientious objector status allowing them to shirk their duty.

Police serve to protect the public. Their religion or lack of it doesn't have anything to do with it. They don't get to pick and choose who to protect.
