I would think that police officers, fire fighters, doctors, etc, would need to prove that they were mentally stable. Most other professions would be forbidden from discriminating on the basis of mental illness, but it seems likely that they would discriminate in that way whether or not they are supposed to.

I don't think that other careers ban you, you just need to find a career that works for you with your mental illness. If being around the public is hard for you, you might think about computer programming, telemarketing, setting up your own website, lawn maintenance company, even a book keeper or accountant.

If being around others isn't the problem then there are a lot of careers out there that you can do you just need to do a lot of self care with yourself and maybe start out somewhere part time.

Find something you really like and go to school for it. Millions of people including me work regular jobs with a mental illness and we are able to do that.

You don't have to tell your employer that you have a mental illness. But if you find yourself not being able to hold a job down because of your mental illness then you should maybe look in to disability services.

chiropractic school refuses some mental illnesses. They'll let you in if you just have ADD / ADHD but if you have trisomy 21, you're not getting in probably.
