I have an 11 month old mixed breed dog. He is about 12 pounds and is a mix between a poodle yorkie and cocker spaniel. He is pretty much perfect except for one thing. When we put him in his crate he FLIPS out. He growls and goes to bite us. He like totally FREAKS out. He only does it when we are crating him while cleaning or leaving for work. When we put him to bed he is fine. I'm not sure what to do. He NEVER growls or goes to bite us any other time. There are certain times he needs to be in a cage when we are home. What should I do?

You need to teach your dog that the crate is a good thing. Something he loves, only give it to him in the crate. Also don't talk to him for about 10 min when you let him out or he will think out is better then in. Keep all the fun and attention for when you put him in. Also put him in the crate 15 min before you leave this way your dog doesn't think the crate means your leaving. If he is good while in the crate talk to him and make him happy.

Did you do any formal crate training with him? I'd suggest leaving the door open and occasionally tossing treats or favorite toys inside so that going to his crate is not always associated with you leaving. Once he goes in the crate, praise him and let him walk out as he pleases. Continue to do this and gradually start closing the door, leaving him there for increasing periods. It's also helpful to teach a command when crating. My dogs know that "go to bed" means to head off to their crates.

some dogs are like this it's called cage aggresstion.....
here are some tips that may stop the behavior..........
feed him little treats by dropping them into the creat while hes in it
when your home put the creat in the living room with you while you watch tv....leave the door open so he can come and go from it.........also try leaving him in it (locked)while your watching tv
when he trys to nipp/bite you while in the creat tell him "NO" and then reach again for the creat.....if he again comes at you say no and repeat....
it's by no means going to be a short process but it is one that you can change....

That doesn't sound good. Try covering the crate with a blanket maybe.

I would put some toys in there for him, or buy one of those
bones that you can put treats in, and that should keep him
occupied for awhile. Also, when I put my dogs in their crate
I give them a piece of their food every time. For me it's
all about routine.
