Yes. After battle that is what was usually done with women and children.
Just as the bible says Moses and other prophets did.

There were lots of options for war prisoners.
One would be to teach 10 Muslims how to read or write. If they did this then they would be set free.
Another would be to choose a husband for themselves. Anyone that they liked and wanted. They weren't forced to do this, as I said they had choices.
They could work and get paid. In Islam it is forbidden for you to have someone working for you and not pay them! So if they worked for you then they got paid. It is also forbidden to have your maid eat in a separate room. So they should be seated with the family at all meals. This shows that a maid is not lower! And so they should be treated the same way you treat your family members.
Some of them even converted to Islam. Again, not by force but because they wanted to.
There is one thing however. The ones I mentioned was at the time of the Prophet. At the time of the 3 kholafa (Abubakr, Omar, Othman) there were numerous accounts of killing people and taking women and children as slaves.
One case was the Persian Princesses. But Imam Ali (alaih salam) didn't let Omar to take them as slaves. So he told the Princesses to chose anyone they liked as their husbands.

I don't know, but if he did, he was not at all unusual for his time. Right now I am reading about Europe in the 8th-9th centuries, particularly the Frankish, Moravian, and Byzantine empires. All three were Christian nations, and none of the three saw anything immoral about slavery; it was an institutionalized part of each state. And that's, what, 200-300 years after Muhammad?

Yes He did. And he was ordered to treat them well no matter what they had done to his people or to him. This was a practice of many societies then....i.e. Abraham, Moses, etc...
