Here is what I always suggest to people who ask me... I would not spend the money on a new set of clubs right away!! You are still learning the game and haven't got a clue of what club work best for you. I would try to borrow some clubs from a friend who has a extra set... (who doesn't have extra clubs lying around!! Every golfer does!!) to see if your going to like the game and stick with it. If you like the game and your friend needs there clubs back then hopefully you will know if your going to stick with the game.
If your at the point now where you want to buy some clubs... I still wouldn't buy a good set yet!! your game will change alot during your beginning phases... I would buy a second hand set of golf clubs, or go to one of the sports stores and you can find a entire set of club for a decent price... i wouldn't spend to much money on your set until you get a little better.
Find a set that will help you enjoy the game. Golf is very frustrating at times but if you listen to every Tom, Dick, and Harry on what clubs work the best they all might be wrong... Clubs that work the best for you are the clubs that you feel comfortable with. Right now don't get to caught up with the name brand stuff!! Your still learning the game!! When your game gets better and your at that point when you feel you want to get a new good set then go get them.
DON'T GET PRESSURED INTO BUYING A SET THAT EVERYONE SAY'S IS THE BEST!!

Woods are going to be a little easier to hit than irons, so for the beginner, a large selection of woods is a good idea.
With having as little experience as you do playing the game, brand name clubs probably aren't going to help you much just yet. The best advice is to stop by a local golf retailer and get fitted for a set of clubs...just don't buy them. Unless you are very tall or short, a standard set of clubs is probably just right for you. However, the fitting will determine that.
Assuming you are "standard" sized, go to eBay and look for a set of used clubs. Cobra and Callaway both make good "game improvement" clubs for people just like you. Nike also has some good clubs. You may not be able to find the exact clubs you're looking for, but just starting out, you really only need a half dozen or so clubs.
The best advice is to find an instructors and take some lessons. I started out as a hack just like everyone. I took two lessons and my handicap is now an 8.

Your getting some good input here with the used set advice. Try your friends clubs and even some club houses will let you try a club that they are selling. Golf Galaxy is a cool place to go and try out some clubs, especially putters. Don't worry about name brands, focus on what type of clubs your testing out for example; what type of shaft- steel, graphite, stiff, regular, uni-flex, and so on. What type of head- blade, cavity back, hybrid and on your driver and woods- the size of the head ( i.e. 420cc or 460cc etc.) After you have a feel for whats best for you, I'd buy a cheap set (you don't have to buy "a Set" don't be afraid to mix and match). Then I'd re-grip them if necessary, you'd be amazed how much difference a new set of grips will make. I have been Golf'n for six months and I am on my second set of irons (which cost 75 bucks) and I love'em (they are Ram FX3) I have a $20 putter and a $20 Driver and I hit them fine. You'll find, like I did, that if you have a poor swing it doesn't matter if your using an old cheap club or a new expense one, your going to have about the same result. Learn the mechanics then worry about the equipment. Most of all Have Fun With IT!!

As a woman, you might want to consider Nancy Lopez clubs. They are a quality club designed specifically for women and can be easily fit for different sizes and strengths. In other words, they are not the one-size-fits-all women's clubs that almost all manufacturers sell (including the big guys).
Another quality club that doesn't cost too much is Adams.
The top brand names are good quality but will cost you: Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, Nike, Cobra, Cleveland.

Go somewhere and get fitted to make sure the shaft lengths are long enough and the lie angles are correct. Then ask the people there, but they will try to sell you what they can get away with. Next find a friend that golfs alot and ask them, or talk to the Pro at your golf course.

You are better off buying "yard sale" clubs for a number of reasons.
First of all,the golfer you are now,is not the golfer you will be in 1 year.It makes no sense to spend big money now on clubs, because
1 year from now,you will KNOW what clubs will work for you.
By buying cheap used clubs, you can try many different types.
Once you hone your game down, and know your strong and weak
points, you will be ready for a more suited set.
Remember,it's a game,have fun!!

if u just started playing golf i would suggest getting some fair clubs, don't get good ones because they will get ruined right away since u are still learning the right way to play and hit the ball.

buy them at a second hand store. I get them for .50 each here. I can get drivers or irons for .50 cents each. I would do that if I were you. Ive been playing for awhile so I do own a couple of good sets now, but for you, 2nd hand stores please.
