There is an eldery man turning 90 in 2 weeks at my church. He is a very sweet man, he has always given me gifts for my birthday, wedding, etc. I would like to get him something, but I don't know what to buy. His wife died a few years ago, I'm not sure If he gets out much. I've already bought him a tie for christmas one year. Any suggestions?

Older people like practical gifts, like a book of stamps or better yet, take him out to lunch someday. He will appreciate the change of scenery and the company. I promise he will remember your kindness for a long time.

Most elderly people have enough clothes. Small thoughtful things are more useful. If you knew his food preferences, I'd say take him a casserole every now and then. Not knowing what he eats, most older people still like sweets. As the taste buds begin to burn out with age, the taste buds that sense sweet things stay till the last. Maybe a box of really nice cookies.
You said he didn't get out much. I have a friend in her 80's who lives in a town where you can buy a book of tickets for the special bus that takes seniors to their appointments. The taxi company there also sells booklets of coupons. Would that be an option in your area?
If you know the person's taste in books, books on tape are a good gift, especially when eye sight isn't good.

What lovely thought. I agree with the above. Time is important to give to anyone!
I am sure he would just appreciate something home cooked like a cake, cookies (soft ones for the teeth maybe?).
As people get older they seem to be less materialistic so something from the heart like that would be lovely.
Does he enjoy any hobbies e.g bridge, poker - you could get him a fancy set of cards.
Does he enjoy reading a favourite magazine or overseas newspaper - you could get him a subscription to it.
Really anything you get will be appreciated and I think it is a lovely gesture - i hope some of these help:-)

Pay for Meals on Wheels for him for a while. Offer to take him places, making a coupon book so he can 'redeem' them as needed. Replenish these coupons every chance you get. Pay someone to clean for him or do yardwork or offer to do it yourself. There are a lot of things that you can do to make the life an elderly person easier and more enjoyable. The greatest gift you can give any elder is your TIME, however. You will be blessed in return. They have knowledge, you know...

I agree with the other two ladies, something home cooked, I'm sure he would love. Bake him a chocolate cake, top it with strawberry glaze and then chocolate icing. It taste like a black forest cake. Throw in some ice cream and you'll win his heart

Thanks for thinking of the elderly. One thing that elderly folks love more than anything else is companionship. I would take him out to a nice restaurant for lunch and coffee. I would then take a nice drive or coffee at starbucks. If you give him a couple of hours of your time it will be the greatest gift of all.
Good luck!

How about brightening up his bed by getting him new bedlinens. If he doesn't mind, try taking him out for a nice dinner.

you could rent a movie and bring dinner to his house. I bet he would like to have the company. Or you could invite him out for dinner (or to your house for a home cooked meal).
