I have a 1998 Toyota Avalon XLS it comes with 6 speakers and a subwoofer. The sound system is rated at 170 watts. However I like listening to rap with a lot of bass and the subwoofer it comes with doesn't throw off as much bass as I want. So my question is, if I buy an additional subwoofer to put in the trunk maybe what else would I need? And would it over power the music, I mean I like a lot of bass but I still want to hear the music. Thanks!

try to change the power amp to a more powerful one. But if you change only the subwoofer's amp, it may cause extra bass being thrown out. it might not sounds good for some people. Since you want more bass, it is worth to be tried.
(try it at the accessory shop before you buy it. If it is really too unpleasant, try to adjust the amp so that more 30Hz is being thrown out and less 60-120Hz).

If you are going to add another sub, you WILL need to add an additional amplifier. The amp that you choose should depend on the subwoofer that you buy. If you are just going to get 1 sub then it should not drown the rest of the music out. You can always adjust the amplifier so that it will put out the bass at a level that you can enjoy. I would also say that if you like rap you may want to add a pair of tweeters. you would be amazed at the difference that two little tweeters can bring to your sound system, but this is just a suggestion and you should build your system according to what YOU like and not what anyone else tells you to get. Also, do not forget your wiring kit for the amp. Enjoy.

well u need 2 buy a sub and an amp also a amp wiring kit, you do not need to buy a head unit but if u want total control of the sub you should buy one. if u want to buy a hu then buy a pioneer or a alpine

u need a sub and amp and amp hook up kit. try some subs from kicker, they pound and they make great amps.
