If you were stranded by an ice storm, how would you handle it? I would try to be patient because I know it is something that the airlines couldn't avoid. But what gets me in the media is why don't people have their cell phones with them while they are in line and call for hotel rooms while they are in line waiting for plane tickets that way?? That is what I would do, or I would call family members and have them call for hotel rooms for me. Opinions??

That is a good idea. I think people think the airlines will take care of them. But the fact is there are just too many in a case like that to take care of everyone. I work for an airline so I'm sure I'd be looking at it from a different point of view. If you are a frequent traveler (even a bit) get the direct phone number of your home airport's counter. They will have access to the same information but won't be swamped like the location you're at. Maybe others wouldn't like that, but if someone called me for help, I'd be more than happy to help them out.

This is very true, but here is another thing most people don't know. Of course the airline won't cover any costs for weather issues but they will give you a voucher for distress rate hotels by the airport, this happend last year in Atlanta to me and the hotel was nice and only cost $50 for the night.
