Our future will depend upon two things, the mind-set of our Congress at the time and who is President.
If we are hit by nuclear missiles and we have the same type of Congress that we have today, America will no longer exist after the smoke clears.
As for our Presidential reaction we will have:
Al Gore: "Don't launcher retaliatory nuclears, we might destroy some trees."
Hillary: " I think we should do this, err... no that, or maybe those, or let's see I think that might work...but I'm not sure."
Obama: " I'm ready to do anything so long as we don't hurt anyone."
Giuliani: " No.1..On the way. No.2 On the Way. No. 3 On the Way,..Let's charcoal the bastards."

we're probably one of the safest countries and most prepared (usa) for a nuclear strike. we have things like missile detection satellites and missiles that're launched from submarines or the ground that can intercept ICBMs (inter-continental ballistic missiles) but i hope we never need to use em =]
