My daughter had the umbilical hernia also, it was about the size of a large marshmallow, and usually purple.
It is part of the intestine so it definitely should not be pushed on or you could cause damage to the intestine.
Her pedi checked it at every check up to ensure that it was not being pinched or damages in any way, and let us know that if it still has not gone down by the she turned 2 we would consider surgery.
After about 1 yr it slowly started to get smaller, and was gone by her second b-day. It did look as though she would have a major outy. She is now 4 with a very minimal outy, almost flat.

It sounds like a belly button hernia. You also need to push it in every time you change the baby. If it does not pop back out immediatly you need to go to the er. They usually say that if it does not go away by age 1, not 2, they will operate.

Its an umbilical hernia. Its very common in baby boys, and most do go away by age 2. My son had a huge one the size of a finger! It was gone by age 3. If he does require surgery, its minor surgery now and a very quick recovery.

Yup, it's an umbilical hernia. Usually there aren't any complications but if he suddenly seems to be in pain because of it take him to the emergency room, it could "cut off" his intestines, which is very dangerous. And by the way, I've never heard of pushing on it. Just watch it and see doctor regularly.

its an umbilical hernia, if it doesn't go in all the way when you push on it or it gets absurdly large (my kids ped. had a baby come in with one the size of a large tomato) then it may need operated on, but by the time my sone was 1 it went down, he's 2 now and it looks like he's gonna live with an outtie button tho

wow, my daughter had a hernia in her belly button when she was a few months old. No one ever told me to push on it.... that makes me nervous that all these people would say to do that and my ped didn't tell me to. Hers went away pretty quickly. I was told not to let her cry to hard, that puts strain on it... I would take the baby to his pediatrician though, ER docs are great, but they have to deal with so much medical stuff for all ages, sickness' and stuff, that they aren't great in actual diagnosis.... they just get you through til you can see your real doctor

its an umbilical hernia, and they usually go away by 2. if not then they operate. my daughter had one and now that shes 11 she has a small outie, but nothing very bad and she never had pain. if he seems to be in pain take him in, otherwise just watch it and if your worried that it got bigger take him in. i wouldnt push on it, but do clean it like a regular belly button and dont let him pick it. take care
