It is a substance (usually heparin, coumadin , lovanox) that prolongs the bleeding time. Makes clotting more difficult. Drugs all work differently along the 'clotting cascade' to accomplish this goal. Usually these drugs are closely monitored to be sure the ability to clot is kept within certain parameters

Medicine that's a blood thinner. It will do nothing to break down an already existing clot. Need thrombolytic medicine to break down a clot. A couple of weeks ago, media kept saying ?Cheney? was on bloodthinners to get rid of a clot. Now that's journalism.

Anything that prevents blood from clotting. Usually this happens with medications that thin the blood. Someone with say heart disease would be taking an anti-coagulant to prevent blood clots.

Another blood thinner would be aspirin.

it's used to prevent clotting of the blood. It makes it so the platelettes can't stick together to form a clot/scab.
