I'm planning on having a mole on my face removed- one right next to my mouth. It's dark, hairy, and ugly. But I want to know what is the procedure when you get a mole removed? And is the scar way bad?

I got a mole removed on my left cheek bone. They gave me a shot to numb the area. Then the doctor used what felt like dental floss that was able to slice thru the bottom of the mole to get it off my skin. After that, the doctor zapped me with some kind of laser to even my skin with the area where the mole was. This sounds way worse than it actually was. The shot hurt a bit but I hate shots. Overall it wasn't bad at all. My scar is small and half the time I don't see it.

I had a mole on my upper arm removed a year The doctor lanced, put a bandage, and I used special ointment for a while - but I still have that pink mark which looks way better than the mole.

And my face was all covered with those birthmarks. They weren't huge/ugly but I hated them so I went for the laser shots. It took several times and I still have to go again - but now I'm almost clean!

P.S. If you have any kind of insurance - you'll have to talk a lot to them because the mole is sent to the laboratory to check if it's cancerous (to prove that they did it for the health's sake, not just for the aesthetics').

I think it depends on the location. I had a mole removed from below my right breast about 10 years ago because it had precancer cells in it. What my doctor did was give me a shot of novacaine and she then cut it out . I was left was a fairly large scar but this is because she took extra tissue any stray cells . I think that they can also freeze a mole off using liquid nitrogen I do not think this leaves a scar much bigger than the mole itself is and it will fade and shrink over time.

I've never had one removed, so someone else will know better than me. But I attended a short class at Kaiser about benign skin lesions. There was a man there with hundreds of moles, and the dermatologist explained that it costs a lot to remove a mole because it is deep. It is more than just chopping off the top or freezing it, as they do for a skin tag.
