Studies in the mid-1800's showed that only children were less socialized and more dependent on parents. However, studies from the last 25 years have shown that only children are more focused in school (scoring slightly higher than children with siblings), able to be more independent from parents at a younger age, and earn higher salaries as adults. In the early 80's only 8% of kids were only children, and now almost 20% are. It is a trend that is growing with parents now-a-days.
My father, myself, and my daughter are all only children and I think for us it was the best thing. My parents did not have much money and if they had 3 or 4 children we would have been very hard up. I was given plenty of attention from my parents but was also able to entertain myself at a young age. As for my daughter, I have every intention of continuing the trend of the only child.

I am an only child and let me tell you that it sucked. I had no one to play with, no one to blame stuff on, and had to do all the chores by myself. I was at home alone after school for several hours and not allowed to go outside or even be on the phone. Yes I am more independent, but It sucks that all of the family I have are cousins, my children only have aunts/uncles on their father's side. I made sure that we would not have an only child, even if we do sacrifice a little, we have each other, and my girls are very happy that way, though not by any means spoiled.

Good things: Lots of attention from my parents, on every account.
Bad things: I was a little spoiled, but got over it later in life.

one misconception is that a single child is spoiled rotten, not true. downsides are when your friends are gone somewhere and you get lonely. upside is you become very independent, which can be bad particularly when it comes to relationships. you don't have a lot of patience for BS.
