Something for everyone but more for the upper middleclass and higher. Lot's of restaurants, shopping, movie theaters on the 3rd Street Promenade. The famous pier and the beach and the beach bikepath that goes for several miles in each direction. Volleyball in the sand (just join one). Rollerblading. Santa Monica Courthouse is where the two OJ trials took place.
Parking sucks. So, try to find a hotel near the 3rd Street Promenade.
Very safe to walk during the day and evening. A bit scary at night, since SM police don't arrest the homeless, therefore they come there from other parts of the city to sleep at night.

Santa Monica is a crowed sea side community, with plenty of beaches. The homes (apartments, condominiums, houses) are very small and ther is virtually no parking for vehicles. It is an expensive and an older community. People are young and wealthy - 20-30 something party types.
With so much noise from non-stop drinking and cafe
parties, peace and quiet are hard to find. It is upscale, cafe life and drinking out, games and art shops. I would look elsewhere as there are better more stable communities for the same rates, unless you have to be there for some reason.

socially, it's great if you're homeless. SM has a very liberal policy regarding the indigent. there is one park where all the homeless congregate.
other than that, it 's an upscale beach town. it's unincorporated, with it's own police and fire. schools are supposed to be above average.
housing is tres expensive. the good thing is the city has rent control, the bad thing is, rentals are few and far between.
3rd street promenade and the pier are always fun.
you will not lack things to do.

Very trendy area, lots of cafes, boutiques and the beach, of course. People are pretty friendly in that pretentious, plastic L.A. kind of way. Parking stinks, though.
