Obviously if the trash bags have residue on them, the cats like the taste of whatever is there. Some cats have a condition called "pica" that causes them to eat/lick plastic, or suck on wool stuff, like socks...ask your vet for treatments. Usually it's just a behavioral problem, but if a cat ingests plastic, it can twist their intestines and kill them...

I don't know, but I know what you're talking about! We have had all male cats that never did, but then we got a female cat from the shelter and she couldn't walk by a plastic bag without licking them and I'm talking ones fresh from a department store (no food in or on them). There must be a type of smell or chemical that attracts them.

Omigod! This isn't really an answer to your question, but I thought our cat was the only one who did that. I thought maybe he has OCD. Ours seems to love to lick the bag, but if we shake a plastic bag, he runs for his life! Hopefully someone will have an intelligent answer to your question!

There probably is/was something in the bag that the cat wants. (dinner scraps?)

its either because they are "tasting something" or enjoying the texture of these items on their tongue!
