I was looking into buying my first rifle, a .22 rifle.

Anybody have any information or suggestions about it? Thanks!

I'd give a thumbs up to the Ruger 10/22 too. It's a wonderful gun and there's loads of goodies for it. However, a bolt action is also a very good choice if you're really interested in precise target shooting. Not that the Rugar isn't capable, it's just that a bolt gun "teaches" you things like follow through and taking your time to set up the "perfect" shot. Regardless what you choose, welcome to the enjoyable world of shooting! Add an NRA membership to your list of purchases too. If you get the full membership with magazine (35.00 a year I believe) you might consider your mag choice as the American Rifleman. It seems to have the most varied firearms articles on both rifles, shotguns and pistols.

It would be hard to go wrong with a Ruger 10/22. They have been around for many years and are proven reliable, inexpensive and easily modified into whatever you perceive as your ideal rifle. Custom parts abound. You could make one into an ultralight hunting rifle or into an accurate bench rifle.

Check the links below, the first is to the Ruger site so you can see all the models. The second link is to rimfire central where you can read about the mods to 10/22's or read about many other rimfire rifles.

Happy shopping!

My first 22 was a ruger model 10-22

At the time it was selling for 119.95... thats been a while ago. more than 20 years have past with many thousands of rounds fired, It has never broke down. I used to take this rifle out every weekend and put 300 to 400 rounds down range eac time. As long as it was feed quality ammo it never failed.
As I got older and more after market stuff came out for it I put a match barrel and thumbhole stock on it and now it is a real tact driver, shoots nickle size groups as long as I do my part at 50 yards.
You may find cheaper guns out there (10-22 sells for around 230.00 now) but in the long run I believe you will enjoy the ruger more. You can customize the rifle to your likes yourself with after market goods when ever you want as no other rifle has a large supply of vendors like the ruger does.

hope this helps, good luck and happy shooting.

It depends what you want to spend and the action type you prefer. I know for under $200 Marlin makes pretty good guns. In the mid price range the CZ's are pretty good. A lot of people like the Savages, and the Ruger 10/22. I like the Brno's and the Anschutz's myself. And I strongly recommend checking out the forums at rimfirecentral.com

I have a keystone sporting arms .22 bolt rifle. It's a great little .22. It is so light, accurate and easy to use. It's a great first gun that only costs $100. It's made in the USA.
Here's the web site for the gun: http://www.crickett.com/CrickettRifle/crickettrifle.html

Happy shooting

If you want an accurate rifle, a bolt or single shot will consistantly give you the best groups. A semi-automatic will be less accurate, but give you fast follow up shots. Ammo can vary in accuracy from between manufacturers and between batches from the same manufacturer. Look at rimfirecentral.com scores for their matches. The best scoring rifle/scope/ammo combinations will be a good place to start.

If you are thinking about hunting with your new rife, you should get a bolt action in .22Lr. This is cheaper to shoot than the .22 magnum and some hunting laws don't allow you to use semi auto rifle or pistols to hunt. If you are thinking about shooting for fun, then choose whichever.
I own marlin rifles and I think these are very accurate firearms.

Any is good semi auto are legal any where he means full auto any name brand even if you buy it from wal-mart i will suggest the value-pack from wal-mart of 550 rounds made by fedreral or winchesters #12 shot those are the mose accurat in my .22 but the #12 shot is like a shotgun so only shoot it about 15 yards bit its still dangerious 1/4 mile away so still be carefull
