As long as you are enjoying yourself that is the main criteria. However I agree with the previous answers that neither is the best. Australia is such a spread out country that traveling in your own vehicle is by far the best.

Britz seem to be one of the most popular and you will always meet new people at camp sites or night venues and hostels etc

I've traveled a couple of different ways around the world, and I don't think either is the cheapest way to get around. The cheapest is hitchhiking, which is fairly easy to do with other backpackers one meets in hostels, and other places. I'm not talking about standing on the highway with your thumb out. I had a van in OZ and had 12 different people travel with me at one point or another. They helped with fuel but that was the only costs.
Greyhound is a bus company while OZ Experience is a tour bus company. I've been on similar buses to the OZ Experience and I'm not that wild about them. While they do help backpackers meet other travelers, there is a tendency for people to stay on the bus with one particular guide. For many travelers it ends up being a bit of a tour. Also, the guides make money on signing the passengers up for activities at the destinations and I ended up having to listen to a lot of activities that I had no interest in. But it is a more social experience that Greyhound which simply provides transport.
In terms of hostels, relax, no worries. OZ has some decent places to stay, including the best hostel that I've ever been to, Cool Bananas, in the Town of 1770. You can either find a guide book or look online as to where you'd like to stay. I went for the cheaper ones generally, Coffee Palace in Melbourne and the Globe in Sydney were my type of bottom end hostels.
Hope this helps a bit.

I travelled around oz..utilising a mix of trains, Greyhound buses, automobiles and planes back in 1996. i offered a Greyhound bus bypass from Sydney to Cairns. I seen the oz..journey. oz..journey is a hop on hop off bus. it might additionally take you around and organise various excursions and activities for you alongside the course. even in spite of the shown fact that, it additionally felt too very like a party bus. it extremely is high quality in case you have the character for it yet i do no longer. i did no longer like the assumption of being in a continual party like environment - all i wanted replaced right into a bus that ought to take me from factor A to show B. So I chosen Greyhound. What I did replaced into choose considered one of their passes so it might take me up the East Coast. It allowed me to break up the journey with stopovers alongside the course. If i had to deviate off the course somewhat, i might only supply up off someplace on the factor of what i had to work out and then the two hire a automobile for the day or purchase yet another bus fee ticket. finding out to purchase a automobile, as you have seen, can provide extra flexibility whilst vacationing. It has a intense in improve and price of petrol desires to be seen. This desires to be outweighed against the fee of alternative modes of return and forth. even in spite of the shown fact that, you do could shield the automobile. The distances you may return and forth could be great. even in spite of the shown fact that, you will meet backpackers alongside the way who could be extra suitable than keen to share the fee of petrol and supply organisation alongside the way.
