My money's on the H&K G36. The Germans make the best guns in the world.

What are you trying to do? There are a lot of factors, some of which are mutually exclusive, that make up a great rifle. Are you after power (the amount of force delivered on target), lethality (the percentage of one-shot kills with the weapon), accuracy at range, durability, ease of use, cost-effectiveness, rate of fire (number of rounds fired in a given period of time, usually measured in rounds per minute) or intimidation factor? What about more esoteric concerns such as length, weight, recoil, stealth, or payload?

You first need to define what role the weapon is going to be used in and who is going to be using it. That will determine which of the above criteria are more important then others.

For example, let's compare the two traditional apples and oranges of rifle comparisons - the M-16A2 Assault Rifle and the AK series of Battle Rifles. The M-16A2 has greater accuracy at range, is lighter, and has a higher cyclic rate of fire. The classic AK-47 is cheaper, more reliable, is easier to use, and is more intimidating. Despite what the uninformed will tell you, the M-16's high velocity 5.56mm and the stubby old Sov 7.62mm round have about the same level of lethality, although the heavier round makes a bigger mess. The newer, lighter 5.45mm cartridge used by the AK-74 is noticeably substandard in terms of penetration without an equivalent increase in range or accuracy. Now let's look at who they were designed for. The M-16 was designed for a highly-trained professional soldier. It is a more complex weapon, machined to higher standards. The AK was designed for the peasant militia who would have little or no training in the use or care of the weapon. In short, the AK is a disposable Polaroid camera - point and shoot. The M-16 is a top end (well, mid-range at this point in weapon design) digital camera - you can do more with it and take better pictures from farther away but it takes more training and care to get the most out of it.

If I had to pick just one for every eventuality I would choose the HK-416 series because of the future that its modular design represents. Imagine for a moment a soldier being able to carry a variety of components for his weapon and being able to reconfigure the rifle for the task at hand on the fly. The 416 isn't like that but that is the next logical extension of a modular design and I can hardly wait for some engineer to figure that out. I would prefer to see this weapon in a bullpup configuration firing a high-velocity 7.62mm multipurpose round but that's just me.

I would go for the AK-47. It cheap to make, and durable. You could remove it in 4 pieces. It could be use in almost every condition. Look at Vietnam. The M16A1 during Vietnam was bad. If it got wet you have to remove it and dry it. The ak you don't have to dry it but it depend on how long it was wet.

Really depends on the environment that its going to be used in. My personal favorite for reliability and accuracy is the M-1903 Springfield.

The M16 has good accuracy, but lacks hitting power and the AK-74 has hitting power, but lacks accuracy at long range.

.416, hands down. it has the accuracy of the m16 and dependability compared to that of the AK47

there is also the model .417 that uses the 7.62 round.
