I have heard that even the romans thought that the use of the cross as tortuos death was a bit too much and that they eventually either just stopped it or banned it alltogether?

The only time the Romans stopped crucifixion was when they ran out of wood. This happened after the slave revolt when some 6,000 people were crucified on the road between Capua and Rome. Fortunately, a new shipment arrived.

Constantine abolished Crucifixion near the end of his reign, which would have been in around 330 A.D.

I don't know, but it's good they did, cause crucifixion is probably THE most inhumane form of torture and death.
