The Cavalry Scout is the commander's eyes and ears on the battlefield. When information about the enemy is needed, they call on the Scouts. They are responsible for reconnaissance and you will learn about various weapons to include explosives and mines. Cavalry Scouts engage the enemy with anti-armor weapons and scout vehicles in the field, track and report enemy movement and activities, and will direct the employment of various weapon systems onto the enemy.
Here are a few of the duties of a Cavalry Scout:
Secure and prepare ammunition on scout vehicles
Load, clear and fire individual and crew-served weapons
Perform navigation during combat
Serve as member of observation and listening posts
Gather and report information on terrain, weather and enemy disposition and equipment
Collect data to classify routes, tunnels and bridges
Employ principles of concealment and camouflage

Im a 19D Cavalry Scout, and on my 2nd tour in Iraq, if you are set on joining the Army combat arms such as 19D is definetly the way to go since you could always be a mechanic or cook or all the other non-combat jobs in the civilian sector, its kinda like why join the Army unless you want to do the things movies about the military are made of. I dont know how proud the cooks, finance, maintenance, signal, MP, or all the other various non-combat jobs people are because they definetly arent doing anything you see in the movies but atleast they arent the ones dying. But as a 19D cav scout I feel very proud being able to face and accomplish what Ive done.
Scouts typically are either Light scouts or Heavy scouts meaning you are either in a unit with Humvees or Bradleys or a mix of both. Some units are Strykers.
As a scout in Iraq my job has mostly been driving around until we find some bad people doing bad things than we detain them and if resist violently we kill them :)

Actually a 19D is a Reconnaissance Specialist.
You would or could be doing the following:
Riding in an M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
Riding in an armored High Mobility Multi-Purpose Vehicle.
Riding on a Horse, there are still several units in the army that have Horse Cavalry and they mainly put on shows for the public.
Riding in a Helicopter.
Riding in an Air Plane and then jumping out of said airplane.
Riding in a Stryker Vehicle.

i was a 19E/K40 for 16 years in teh army so ill try to help. if your in a cav company you will probably be in teh bradley and basically your job is to go out and "scout" the enemy, eg find them, and if need be engage them, but preferably to stay hidden. tehn you call up the Kilos ( M1 Abrahams) and we blow them away. tahts how it spossed to work. you will also be involved in route recon, finding a path to a location, and assembly area and advanced party scouting where you will chck an area for teh unit to occupy for a given length of time during an operation. those are the major events you would be doing, depending on your specific job you could eb driving the vehicle, be a grunt, be the vehicle commander when you make sergeant etc or be the gunner of teh vehicle. you also have to be able to dig fighting positons, lay mines and string wire and perfomr basic soldier duties. the 19D has 4 levels 19D10 20 30 and 40. ( these roughly correspond to private, specialist, buck and or staff sgt and platoon or master sgt) there are specific tasks associated with each level you obtain. SCOUTS OUT

i replaced into questioning of turning right into a member of the army and transforming into a Cavalry Scout, yet i desperate to circulate to college. i admire the job, it is significant when you consider which you are the 1st ones in to map out the area and such. Very risky. If the conflict is over, you would be placed in a station someplace. you may in all probability prepare and in basic terms stay existence till they call you into provider. keep in mind in spite of the shown fact that, you're actually not absolute to get the job you choose.

This is usually a decent description
http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/army/p/19d.htm?terms=19D+
In the present conflict you will serve primarily as infantry, most every one does. Cav is playing a smaller and smaller role as the military moves to a smaller, lighter, ground force. I know a lot of 19D and 19K who are transitioning to 11B
