Another friend and I are doing the planning. She suggested an outdoor beach setting. We'd like to work with this idea, and include cocktails for those of us who aren't pregnant, as well as non-alcoholic drinks and some type of appetizer or dessert that we could bring and easily serve there. Does anyone have experience planning a baby shower? What did you think worked best at your party? I'd like to diverge from the traditional type of event with silly games and pink streamer decorations (however, I can see why these things are fun and may be up for incorporating some of them into the shower).

I am a consultant with a company that makes skin care, spa products and cosmetics. My favorite type of home party is when we have a theme. One of the themes I offer, is the "I'm having a baby" party. Family & friends, bring all the traditional "baby shower" gifts, BUT. . . .instead of games, I show my products. The Mom-to-be and the guests have a chance to feel, touch, smell & experience what some of our products csn do for them. Guests get to purchase if desired and the Mom-to-be receives all the hostess credits. She also is extrememly pampered. I bring a foot tub. MTB gets to soak her aching, tired feet using our bath fizzies and hot water. Then, she has her choice of body creme or body butter balm to use on her feet. I use the our muscle rub on her back to relieve the stress & relax the muscles. The Mom-to-be also has her choice of facial treatment and she gets a makeover.. It is a great time for all who attend, and anyone else expecting is usually saying, "we are doing this next for me", before the party is over.

If you have someone in your area who can do a mom-to-be skin care/spa show , I suggest you go for it.

I had my baby shower last July and I loved that it was outdoors and we BBQ'd. I thought it was different from the norm. One game that we did that I'd never seen was this:

As people are coming in, you tell them that you are having a raffle. The guests can contribute however much they want with the guarantee that the winner will win ALL. Well, winning gets everyone excited so they contribute alot. The money goes into a piggybank type thing. Have everyone write their name on a piece of paper at the end of the shower and then pull a name from the pile. Present the winner with ALL detergent and give the money to the expectant mommy to start a bank acct or whatever for the baby.

Have fun!!

Sounds like a great idea! A friend of mine put a blank book out on the table at my shower and asked everyone to write some advice down. About anything, Motherhood, Newborns, Toddlers, Sex after Baby, Teething, anything. I loved going back and seeing what everyone had to say. Good Luck! ( I wish mine was at the beach!!)

I did a family BBQ and invited everyone. The ladies (or whomever is interested) can play a few games that are planned off to the side or whatever. A great game to involve the dad/men is to have a drinking contest, they have to see who can drink a (baby) bottle of beer the fastest! Take lots of pictures!

what about kabobs for the food, they don't have to be cooked on the grill, you can always make them with cold cuts and chunks of cheese or make them with fruit. I'd see about getting the flower leis and the coconut cups for the drinks..I bet if you go to a party warehouse you can find a lot of "beach" theme stuff.
