Why do you want to put your dog to sleep? Some vets will not do it unless there is a medical or extreme behavioral reason.
Euthanasia can be performed with little or no pain.
Most, if not all, vets can put your animal to sleep.
You should have a very compelling reason for ending your dog's one and only life. If it is absolutely necessary, you may want to consider what you will do with her/him after the procedure.
In some places you might be able to bury your pet on your property. Otherwise, pet cemeteries or cremation may be a good option.
If you have children, depending on their age, you may want to involve them in the process so that they can mourn the loss of their pet.

First of all- what's wrong with your dog that it needs to be put to sleep? Animals should only be put to sleep if they have a life threatening disese, or if you can't afford medical treatment for a serious problem. I was just curious because 8 isn't very old for a dog, and you didn't list what was wrong. Also, moving away and not being able to take your dog is not a reason for it to be put to sleep. But anway, to answer your questions. 1) The only pain involved is the needle being placed into the dogs skin, which is usually very very little. 2) Any licensed vet can put an animal to sleep. 3) You must meet with the vet, find out the cost (it's usually very little) and set up a time. If the vet finds it fit to put the animal to sleep they will do so. If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me at xmainyax@yahoo.com

Why do you want it put to sleep? If it is not sick it can still live another 4 to 7 years. If you don't want it, think through why you don't want it any more and see what solutions you can come up with. There are many rescue groups that may take him and find him a new home, but it may be that you only need to learn some different training techniques to make him fit in with your family.
If your dog has a serious illness, you will need to contact a veterinarian. The vet will give him two shots, and the dog will quickly go to sleep forever. The only pain is felt when the needle is inserted and that only lasts an instant. It is over quickly.

They say that the animal just falls asleep. But why do you want to do it? Is the dog ill? If the dog is healthy & you are putting it to sleep because you can't keep it anymore ask the vet if they can recommend a new home or shelter. Put an ad in the classified section of your local paper under the "Absoluterly Free" section.

I don't know what problems your dog has, why you want to
put him down, but, the dog does not feel any pain.
I have had to do this before.
The vet gives two needles to the dog. The first one puts the
dog to sleep, and the second needle stops the dogs heart.
The vet will check after the second needle has been given
for a heart beat, and within seconds the dog will be put
down.

You go to the vet, he weighs the dog, to find out how much euthanization medication to use.
Then he asks you why you are putting the dog down. Wants to make sure that it hasn't bitten someone and you are just trying to dump the dog.
Then he gives a shot that makes the dog to go to sleep, and another shot that stops his heart etc.
Then you have to decide if you are going to have him cremated, take him home and bury him or give him to the vet to dispose of.
Then you go home and hope that you did the right thing and you couldn't have tried something else, or done something differently and wish that you had given it a few more days just to make sure that the dog didn't miraculously get better.. Then you cry :(

First, why do you want to put it to sleep? I am hoping you have ligitimate reasons. Yes, a vet can do it, and I would definetely suggest that you visit one. Whatever the situation is, it may not be as dire as you think. The dog does not feel any pain, but be prepared for an uneasieness and struggle with guilt. It is one of the hardest things any human can do. Good luck.

Why do u want to put it to sleep? Is he/she sick? Is he/she terminally sick? That would be the only reason to put an animal to sleep. No reputable Vet would put your dog to sleep unless it is termially ill. 8 years old is still young for a dog. A reputable vet injects the dog with a lethal injection that justs put the dog to sleep. Are you just tired of your dog or what...you should specify if it is sick or not, or you will get alot of angry responses from true animal lovers! If you have questions, ask your Vet...no one else!

When a dog is put to sleep they don't feel anything. The medicine used takes over thier muscles and nerves putting them in a deep sleep. While asleep the heart stops. they don't know anything. Yes a local vet can do it. You can have the vet despose of the body or you can take him/her home to be buried.

Take your dog to your local vet. They need to be the ones that do it. I recently had a cat put to sleep and it was basically a shot and she went to sleep and that was it. They will take care of disposing of the body. I had mine cremated tho which added about $200 to the bill.
